Variations Of The Battlestar Galactica Plot

By Willard Y. Wuckert

Battlestar Galactica is a popular and famous science fiction franchise that, in spite of having been around for decades, continues to attract new fans. The complete world of this sci-fi storyline began in 1978, but since then it has expanded dramatically to include several different television series, novels, comic books, and even video games. Fans around the world are enjoying these varying adaptations and extensions of the original story and characters because it allows them a chance to truly experience the world of Galactica. A few of the characters have been through more changes than others as the franchise has been altered during the years, but the core concepts of the original story have been preserved and cherished throughout BGS history.

Glen Larson was the mind making both the original series that ran for one season in 1978 as well as the brief sequel released in 1980 which contained a few of the original characters. The basic idea of BGS is that the wicked robotic Cylon race is always trying to destroy the few remaining humans left in the galaxy. Although the show was taken off the air after just one season, it earned a cult following amongst many fans who even protested the cancellation outside of the television studio that broadcasted the show.

A fresh version of the original television series was made starting in 2003 with a three hour miniseries and continuing as a weekly show from 2004 to 2009. This was a re-imagining of the first series so it featured the identical basic characters with some notable updates to make them feel more realistic for modern viewers. The fact that this later series was so much longer than the original meant that the producers could spend more time creating deep, intricate characters.

The story of Battlestar Galactica and its characters did not go to rest with the final episode in 2009 because spin off series were already in the works. Caprica was aired in 2010 as a one season spin off that served as a prequel, informing viewers on some of the events that led up to the first episode of the 2004 series.

Fans of the Battlestar Galactica series still like all of the different adaptations of these characters stories that they can find. The war between the humans and the Cylon will not end, whether it be in new online games or in forthcoming television programs.
